Discover the contrasts between the three Baltic States: Lithuania, Latvia and Estonia with our choice of motoring holidays through all three; take in the capitals Vilnius, Riga and Tallinn but much more besides. Stop off at the beautifully restored Trakai Castle; visit the Curonian Spit, a fifty mile tongue of land dividing the Baltic from a lagoon and take a stroll along Jurmala’s beach alongside which 19th century villas are being restored.
Our chosen routes differ in as much as ‘Classic Cities and Countryside’ allows for rather more time in each capital; both are based on good tourist class hotels with overnight accommodation in twin bedded rooms with private WC shower. Hotel standards in all countries are rapidly changing for the better but make allowances for the fact that this is still a post communist world. BALTIC EXPLORER
DAY 1 UK–TALLINN Scheduled Estonian Air flight to Tallinn. Collect car at airport and overnight at Hotel Uniquestay Mihkli.
DAY 2 TALLINN Day at leisure.
DAY 3 TALLINN-TARTU Leave for Tartu visiting Rakvere and Lahemaa National Park. Head south to Mustvee driving along the banks of Lake Peipsi. Continue to Tartu and overnight at Hotel Hansa.
DAY 4 TARTU-CESIS-SIGULDA Continue from Tartu through the scenic Voru region to the border town of Valga/Valka. After crossing the border into Latvia continue to the old Hanseatic town of Cesis and through the Gauja National Park to Sigulda. Overnight at Hotel Sigulda.
DAY 5 SIGULDA-SABILE-KANDAVA-KULDIGA Early morning start heading for Courland and the towns of Kandava and Sabile where once the northernmost vineyards in Europe could be found. From here on to Kuldiga and see the wildest waterfall in Northern Europe on the river Venta. Overnight Hotel Jana Nams.
DAY 6 KULDIGA-KLAIPEDA–PALANGA– KLAIPEDA-NIDA Heading for Liepaja drive via the military harbour and the submarine docks. From Liepaja drive to Klaipeda via the seaside resort of Palanga for a visit to the Amber Museum in the former Tyszkevicz Palace. Take the small ferry to Smiltyne and continue to Nida taking time to explore the unique Curonian Spit with its dunes and pine
forests. Overnight at Hotel Nidos Smilte.
DAY 7 NIDA-KLAIPEDA-KAUNAS-VILNIUS After leaving Nida and heading for Vilnius make a stop in Kaunas for a walk in the Old Town visiting the Old Town Hall and Kaunas Cathedral. En route to Vilnius visit the medieval Lithuanian capital Trakai and its castle on Lake Galve. Overnight at Hotel Uniquestay Centrum.
DAY 8 VILNIUS-SAULIAI-RUNDALE-RIGA Visit the Old Town seeing Vilnius Cathedral, Gediminas Tower, Old University and the Gates of Dawn. Leave Vilnius at noon and drive through the central part of Lithuania and into Latvia. Visit Rundale Palace before driving to Riga. Overnight at Hotel Europa City.
DAY 9 RIGA Day at leisure.
DAY 10 RIGA-PARNU-TALLINN Drive via the coastal highway to the Estonian seaside resort of Parnu for a short stroll along the beach before continuing to Tallinn. Overnight at Hotel Uniquestay Mihkli.
DAY 11 TALLINN–UK Drop off car at the airport. Scheduled Estonian Air to the UK.
