Trek for 6 days amongst the remote mountain hinterland of Landmannahellir for a taste of Icelandic nature as raw as it can be, wiith overnight stays in turf roofed mountain huts.
AUSTVADSHOLT FARM
In the foothills of Mt. Hekla, Jon Benediktsson and Nicole Chéné have been breeding horses at Austvadsholt Farm and organizing tours along the historic trails in the Highlands and Landmannalaugar for over twenty five years. Now succeeded by their daughter Anita both she and the horses know these trails like the back of their hand. Overnight lodging is in mountain huts with dormitory sleeping bag accommodation and your luggage being transported from point to point and plenty of mountain raised lamb on the full board menu.
DAY 1 UK-REYKJAVÍK Scheduled Iceladair flight to Reykjavík, transfer to and overnight at Hotel Leifur Eíriksson.
DAY 2 REYKJAVÍK-HELLA Breakfast at hotel and self transfer by bus to Hella and then private transfer to Austvadsholt farm and overnight.
DAY 3 HELLA-RJUPNAVELLIR After breakfast get to know your horse and is set off for the lodge at Rjupnavellir. Ride through meadows and lava fields, alongside Ranga river passing the historical lava sheep-fold Landrettir. 5 hours riding. Overnight at Rjupnavellir.
DAY 4 RJUPNAVELLIR-LANDMANNAHELLIR Morning departure from Rjupnavellir to the wilds, crossing an ash desert and Solvahraun lava field close to Hekla. A 6 hour ride brings you to Fjallabak Nature Reserve and the historic area of Landmannahellir, where farmers stay whist gathering their sheep in the mountains. Overnight at lodge in Landmannahellir for 3 nights.
DAY 5 LANDMANNAHELLIR Morning 3 to 4 hour ride through Domadal valley past Frostastadarvatn lake on the way to Landmannalaugar with its old craters and colorful mountains. Afternoon at leisure exploring or bathing in a natural hot water pool. Leave the horses, drive back to Landmannahellir.
DAY 6 LANDMANNAHELLIR Morning drive back to Landmannalaugar. Ride exploring the area via another route to Landmannahellir, a wild track previously known only to farmers. Traverse the inactive explosive craters such as Ljotipollur and Hnausapollur, pass several lakes, in this volcanic soft, rough landscape. 5 hours riding. Overnight in Landmannahellir.
DAY 7 LANDMANNAHELLIR-AFANGAGIL Cross lava fields down from the highlands, head towards Afangagil valley, a special place where sheep farmers gather in September for the sheep sorting “rettir”. 5-6 hours riding. Overnight in a shepherds lodge at Afangagil.
DAY 8 AFANGAGIL-HELLA Leave Afangagil early in the morning for the ride back to the farm Austvadsholt. Cross ash deserts and other impressive uninhabitable regions of Hekla. Continue through farmlands and across the Ranga river to get to the home meadows where the horses are released for a well earned rest. 7-8 hours ride. Overnight and dinner at the farm.
DAY 9 REYKJAVÍK-UK Private transfer to Hella, a bus to Reykjavík airport via Reykjavik and scheduled flight to the UK.
