HOLIDAYS TO SWEDEN

IMAGES OF SWEDEN
9 days from £1170 pp

Discover Sweden from coast to coast: stylish Stockholm and its 24,000 island archipelago; the beauty of the Swedish countryside and the wooden clapboard village of Grythyttans; the vast serenity of Lake Vanern and maritime Gothenburg. A perfect way to discover Sweden from east to west.

Your first stop on this 9 day tour is Sweden’s capital, Stockholm, which the novelist, Selma Lagerlof, called “the city that floats on water”. The old town still has the feel of a medieval city, the City Hall with its decorated brickwork, topped with spires and minarets, dominates the skyline and just 10 minutes across the harbour is the island of Djurgarden, often thought of as Stockholm’s playground. Beyond the city are the literally thousands of islands and skerries, reachable by boat from the harbour opposite the Royal Palace, and the university town of Uppsala with the botanical garden designed by Carl Von Linne, the botanist who devised the modern system of plant classification.

From Stockholm, you travel by train to Örebro and are taken by car to Grythyttan and one of Sweden’s most renowned country house hotels. The hotel is set around a series of fine old courtyards in the village itself, close by a lake and the dining room has a culinary reputation that has spread far and wide. The surrounding countryside is typically some of the most attractive in Sweden and an excellent area for comfortable walking.

After Grythyttan, your journey takes you by train, alongside Lake Vanern, to the Dutch designed city of Gothenburg on Sweden’s west coast. Gothenburg has a wealth of attractions including a sightseeing tour on “Paddan”, one of the flat bottom sightseeing boats that cruise along the old moat and 17th century canals. Saluhallen, the city’s largest indoor market laden with Swedish specialities such as seafood, cheese and meats, is the perfect place for lunch and last minute food shopping.
