SPITSBERGEN EXPEDITION CRUISES
DAY 1 UK - OSLO Scheduled SAS flight to Oslo. Overnight Clarion Oslo Airport Hotel.
DAY 2 OSLO - LONGYEARBYEN Early morning scheduled SAS flight from Oslo to Longyearbyen. Transfer to your ship. Ship sails early evening.
DAY 3 Sail, through scenic Isfjorden for Alkhornet, whose cliffs are home to a large colony of Kittiwakes. Continue to Trygghamna to visit the remains of a 17th century English whaling station.
DAY 4 Sail through Forlandsundet. Weather-permitting, we will go ashore at Fuglehuken, where we can see colonies of Brunnichs’s Guillemots, Little Auks and Kittiwakes along with, Harbour Seals and Walruses.
DAY 5 Visit Ny Ålesund where Barnacle Geese, Pink-footed Geese, Common Eiders, Arctic Terns, Wader and Reindeer can be seen.
DAY 6 Morning departure to the 14th July Glacier where we board Zodiacs for a spectacular cruise. Nearby there is a breeding site for Little Auks and Puffins.
DAY 7 Sailing northwards we visit Magdalenafjord with its impressive glacier fronts. Ashore we view the remains of a 17th century whaling station and the substantial seabird colonies here.
DAY 8 We try to visit the tiny island of Ytre Norskoya, a former lookout point for Dutch whalers and the remains of 17th century blubber ovens.
DAY 9 Spitsbergen’s north coast has spectacular glaciers and varied wildlife. Good chances of spotting Polar Bears and Belugas.
DAY 10 Attempt a landing on Reindyrfla, the largest tundra on Spitsbergen. See Red-throated Divers and King Eiders.
DAY 11 Visit the remains of Smeerenburg, the largest 17th century whaling settlement and (if permitted) Danskøya, remains of the 19th century expedition by the Swedish balloon explorer Andree.
DAY 12 Sailing south, we will attempt a landing on the coast of Forlandsundet, where Walruses are often hauled out. From there steam straight for Longyearbyen.
DAY 13 LONGYEARBYEN - UK Dock at Longyearbyen. Return SAS flight(s) to UK via Oslo.
