HOLIDAYS TO ICELAND

WHALES UNDER THE MIDNIGHT SUN
7 days from £1360 pp

Enjoy this unique and exclusive opportunity to spot for whales under the midnight sun, sailing from the fishing village of Húsavík to the diminutive island of Grímsey on the Arctic Circle. Land on the island at midnight and barbecue under the stars. Follow up with days by Lake Mývatn a geological extravaganza with pseudo craters, steaming vents and tortuous rock formations.

DAY 1 UK-ICELAND Scheduled Icelandair flight to Akureyri in Northern Iceland via Reykjavík. Collect hire car and drive to Húsavík. Check-in at Fosshotel Húsavík for 2 nights.
DAY 2 HÚSAVÍK Time to look around this colourful fishing village, gen up on whale facts at the Whale Museum and sample the freshest fish on the planet at one of the harbour side restaurants. Mid to late afternoon board a traditional wooden, carvel built trawler adapted for passengers and whale spotting and head out in the Skalfandi bay en route to Grímsey, an island whose northern tip lies across the Arctic Circle. Your guide keeps you alert for minke, fin, humpback, sei and other species as well as dolphins and porpoise before landing on the island for a barbecue under the midnight sun. Enjoy locally farmed lamb washed down with Viking beer before sailing south back to Húsavík where you dock at around 2:00 am.
DAY 3 HÚSAVÍK – MÝVATN After a long lie-in take either the shorter route along the undulating Holasandur to Reykjahlíð by Lake Mývatn or drive around the Tjörn peninsula in to Ásbýrgi canyon, a vast horseshoe-shaped depression formed by glacial flooding, via Dettifoss. Hotel Reykjahlíð for 2 nights.
DAY 4 MÝVATN Time to explore the extraordinary scenery and wildlife in the area: the wooded headland at Höfði with its lava pillars; contorted black towers of Dimmuborgir; the pastel coloured Námafjall ridge with its steamy surroundings and smouldering, sulphurous Krafla
DAY 5 MÝVATN - REYKJAVÍK Drive along through Frjoskadalur with its meandering river and alongside Eyjafjörður, drop off car and domestic flight to Reykjavík. Self transfer to Hotel Centrum for 2 nights.
DAY 6 REYKJAVÍK Time to chill out in this capital of ultra cool, look around the city or take a tour out to Gullfoss and Geysir.
DAY 7 REYKJAVÍK – UK Mid morning transfer to Keflavik Airport via the Blue Lagoon for a valedictory bathe before return flight to UK.
