HOLIDAYS TO NORWAY

HUSKY MUSHING WITH SVEN ENGHOLM
5 days from £1315 pp

Mush your own team of huskies in the heartland of the Northern Sami, learn at first hand from an accomplished master how to prepare your dog team, feed and look after them on safari. Swoosh across the tundra, hopefully catching the aurora in the sky’s starlit canopy and touch the life of a bygone age.

Near to Karasjok, home to the Sami’s own Parliament, are the vast plains of Finnsmarkvidda and the contrasting pine and birch forests of the Tana river basin, both of which provide some of Lapland’s most scenic husky trails. Other than a reasonable level of fitness all that is needed to learn and enjoy husky mushing in style is the desire to do it. Eschewing such modern accessories as snowmobiles for the luggage, Sven Engholm will match his dogs to your body strength, leading you across frozen wilderness plains and along forested trails.

ENGHOLM'S HUSKY LODGE

Sven Engholm’s eponymous lodge is a collection of log houses built, furnished and decorated by Sven personally along with his ‘Barta’, a turf roofed log house around whose centerpiece open fire evening meals are cooked. Set alongside the awesome grandeur of the Finnmark plateau, the lodge serves as base camp for husky mushing from ‘hytte to hytte’ across the Karkasjohka River. The winner of Europe’s longest sled dog race, a qualified geographer and dog nerd, Sven keeps around 40 dogs trained for endurance racing and tours.
